Bio: Kathi Appelt was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina, and grew up in Houston, Texas. She lives in College Station, TX with husband Ken and six adorable cats. Appelt is the author of more than 30 books. She writes novels, picture books, poetry, and nonfiction for children and young adults. Kathi Appelt is the author of the Newbery Honoree, National Book Award finalist, PEN USA Literary Award–winning, and bestselling The Underneath as well as the National Book Award finalist The True Blue Scouts of Sugar Man Swamp, Keeper, and many picture books including Counting Crows. She writes novels, picture books, poetry, and nonfiction for children and young adults. She used to think that a real writer had to have lots of exciting, maybe even dangerous, adventures in order to have something meaningful to write about. Now she know that the best writing is about the people, places, pets, and objects that surround us and that we meet every day. Appelt feels that writing is really a way of seeing and she encourages future writers to get out an old journal or start a new one and see what shows up.
